AFL All Time Teams

The ALL 1960’s AFL team is the our All Time AFL team since the AFL merge with the NFL in 1970. We looked at players from all teams all years and came up with our All-Time AFL squad.

Quarterback is the first passer to throw from more than 4,000 yards (4,007) in a 14 game season which was an NFL record until the Charger’s Dan Fouts broke the record (4,082) playing in 16 games that being the Jets "Broadway" Joe Namath. Namath led the New York Jets to what is considered one of the greatest upsets in sports history when the Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7. The former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback passed for 2435 yards on 205 completing an average of 11.8 yards per reception. Namath earned one more first team All-Pro nod. Namath earned MVP honors in 1968 and tied with Daryl Lamonica in 1969

Daryl Lamonica nicknamed the “Mad Bomber” of the Oakland Raiders. Lamonica was the AFL MVP in the 67 & 69 seasons. While we looked at career stats we deducted Lamonica’s time with the Buffalo Bills where he was not a starting QB, with the Raiders Daryl averaged 3265 yards while completing 413 that average 15.1 yards per reception and 29 TD’s, . Lamonica earned the MVP in 1967 the year Namath passed for 4,007 yards and tied Namath for the MVP in 1969. The former Notre Dame quarterback would lead in the AFL in passing yards and twice in TD passes

Running backs

Clem Daniels, Oakland Raiders is the AFL’s all-time leading rusher with 5,101 while adding 3,291 yards through the air. Daneils would find the endzone 54 times through air and ground which placed him seventh on the AFL All-Time touchdown scoring list

Abner Haynes, Dallas Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets. The former University of North Texas alumn would finish third as the AFL’s leading rusher with 4,630 while adding 3,535 yards with 287 receptions. Haynes would reach the endzone 66 times which would place Abner fourth All-Time in AFL history. Haynes topped the AFL All-Time combined yards with 12,065

Fullback

Jim Nance, Boston Patriots. The former Syracuse back would lead the AFL twice in rushing and once in rushing scores. Garrett would in his five year AFL tenure would gain 5,402 yards, average 4.0 yard per carry while scoring 45 rushing TD’s while garnering two All-Pro selections

Wide Receivers

This position was the most difficult to pick, therefore we went with the AFL’s top four as you will see why we had difficulties

Lance Alworth who second on the All-Time AFL receiving yards when he hauled in 458 passes for a total of 8,976, which is an average of 1,122 yards per season, also known as Bambi Alworth would reach the endzone 77 times via the air ranking him third on the AFL All-Time touchdown per reception.The Arkansas Razorback alumn would lead the AFL in yards per catch with 19.5 per reception. “Bambi” would lead the AFL twice in receptions and three times in yards

Don Maynard placed second on the AFL All-Time receptions with 546 (second All-Time in the AFL history), which he would average 18.8 yards per reception. Maynard’s 10,289 paced first on the AFL All-Time receiving yards. Maynard would find the goal line another AFL All-Time receiver touchdowns with 84. The former UTEP product would lead the league in receiving yards and touchdown receptions once.

Art Powell who played for the New York Titans, Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills. Powell ranked second All-Time with 81 receiving touchdowns, third in receptions 478. The former San Jose Aztec would lead the AFL twice in receiving yards and twice in receiving scores.

Lionel Taylor, Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers is the AFL All-Time leader in receptions with 567 while gaining 7,915 yards on those receptions. The undrafted New Mexico Highlands player would lead the AFL five times in receptions, six times in his nine year AFL career Taylor caught a minimum of 75 passes.

Tight End

Fred Arbanas Kansas City Chiefs caught 190 passes as a tight end while gaining 2,993 yard and reaching the endzone 33 times. Abranas, a Michigan State alumni was selected to four Al AFL teams during his eight year AFL playing career.

Dave Kocourek Oakland Raiders during 5 years in which he recorded 10 or more receptions he hauled in 150 passes as he gained 2323 yards on those receptions and crossed the goal line 18 times. The former Wisconsin Badger averaged 464 yards per season which was top amongst full time AFL Tight Ends

Center

Jim Otto the Oakland Raiders is arguably the greatest center of all-time in both the AFL and NFL. Otto from the University Miami (FL). Otto was selected to the AFL All-Pro team each of the ten years the AFL was in existence.

Tackles

Ron Mix, San Diego Chargers, in nine of his 10 years playing in the AFL for the San Diego Chargers, Mix, a product from USC was selected to the All-Pro team, eight years as tackle and one season (1962) as guard.

Jim Tyrer Kansas City Chiefs,Tyrer as five time AFL All-Pro during his nine year AFL career came out of Ohio State Tyrer anchored a Chiefs line that would help give the AFL their second straight Super Bowl victory.

Guards

Bob Talamini Houston Oilers and New York Jets. A four time AFL All-Pro selection. Talamini played the entire 10 years of the AFL. Talamini came to the AFL after a collegiate career at the University of Kentucky. Talamini was part of the New York Jets Super Bowl III upset over the Baltimore Colts.

Bill Shaw Buffalo Bills played his entire football career in the AFL from 1961-69. Shaw was selected as AFL All-Pro five consecutive years 192-66. Shaw arrived to the Bills when he concluded his college career with the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech. Shaw was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

Defensive Ends

This was one of closet races we had when selecting our ALL AFL Team

Earl Faison played most of his six year AFL career with the San DIego Chargers. Amongst defensive only stats Faison had 31.0 sacks, intercepted six passes along with one fumble recovery. The former Indiana Hoosier would earn four All-Pro selections in his career.

Ron McDole Buffalo Bills during McDole’s eight year tenure in the AFL he also intercepted six passes, recorded seven fumble recoveries to go along with 32.0 sacks. The former Nebreaska Cornhusker would earn one All-Pro selection.

Jerry Mays Kansas City Chiefs would post 45.5 sacks from the defensive end position. The former SMU Mustang would record two fumble recoveries, and pick off one pass during his nine year AFL career. Mays was selected to two AFL All-Pro Teams.

Larry Eisenhauer Boston Patriots was selected to three AFL All-Pro Teams during a nine year AFL career. The former Boston College Eagle would post 43.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and interception.

Defensive tackle

This was another that was difficult to narrow down so we decided to go with the following:

Ernie Ladd San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs. Ladd was a three time ALL AFL selection during his time with the Chargers. The Grambling State Tigers alum would record one interception, two fumble recoveries along with 33.5 sacks for his defensive tackle position

Buck Buchanan Kansas City Chiefs. Like Ladd, Buchanan was a product of Grambling State. During his AFL playing career with the Chiefs, Buchanan would register one interception, three fumble recoveries as well as 43.5 sacks during his nine year AFL tenure.

Tom Sestak Buffalo Bills. The McNeese State Cowboy would go on to play seven seasons with Buffalo earning AFL All Pro recognition three times. Sestak would post two fumble recoveries and two interceptions, while recording a staggering 52 sacks, in the 1964 season Sestak was credited with 15.5 sacks

Middle Linebacker

Nick Buoniconti, Boston Patriots, Miami Dolphins. During his eight year AFL career the former Fighting Irish players would go on to an eight year AFL career where he would earn All-Pro honors four times with the Patriots one time with Miami. Buoniconti would record 20 sacks during his AFl career.

Outside Linebacker

Larry Grantham New York Titans, New York Jets. The former Ole Miss product would play 10 years in the AFL during this time Grantham would earn five All-Pro selections, while posting 31 sacks and recovering two oppositions fumbles.

Bobby Bell Kansas City Chiefs. During Bell’s seven year AFL career the first two years he was a defensive end, the last five years he was switched to outside linebacker where he earned AFL All-Pro honors. The former Minnesota Gopher would post career stats as a linebacker with 20 sacks, 15 interceptions, two he returned for touchdowns while adding a fumble recovery.

Cornerbacks

Willie Brown Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders. Brown was a three time AllAFL selection during his seven year stint in the AFL. Brown would intercept 25 opponent passes, two of which he returned for scores. Brown continued the Grambling tradition of AFL All Pro’s

Fred Williamson, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs. During his seven year AFL carer Williamson would be a two time All-Pro selection. The Northwestern alum would take away 36 opponents passes, taking one for a touchdown.

Miller Farr Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers. During his five year AFL stint, he played four seasons at corner where Farr picked off 22 passes and a league lead 10 in the 1967 season. The former Wichita State Shocker would return five of the interceptions to the end zone.

Dave Grayson Dallas Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders. Grayson played corner back for his first six seasons intercepting 25 passes, two of which he found pay dirt. The former Oregon Duck would also earn AFL All-Pro two times as a safety.

Safety

Johnny Robinson Dallas Texans, Kansas City Chiefs. The eight years Robinson played safet he was a five time AFL All-Pro. The former LSU Tiger would intercept his opponents 43 times,with a touchdown, in 1966 he lead the AFL with 10 picks

Goose Gonsoulin Denver Broncos. A two time AFL All-Pro selection. In 1960 he paced the AFL with 11 of his career 40 interceptions in his seven year AFL career. The former Baylor Bear would return two of his interceptions for scores.

George Saimes, Buffalo Bills a three time All-Pro during his seven year AFL career. The former Michigan State Spartan would haul in 22 interceptions, and would recover three opponents' fumbles for the Bills.

Kicker

Gino Cappelletti, Boston Patriots. Cappelletti would boot 176 field goals, 342 extra points for a total of 870 points the former Minnesota Golden Gopher would kick.Cappelletti would be named AFL Player of the Year following the 1964 season, that season Gino had seven TD receptions, a two point conversion, was perfect on all 36 PAT’s and booted 25 field goals for a 155 points. Six times he would score 100 or more points in a season.

Punter

Bob Scarpitto, Denver Broncos, Boston Patriots. Scarpitto would punt only four seasons during those four seasons twice he paced in punts, punting yards and average per punt. The former Notre Dame product would have the longest punts in his four seasons as punter.
