This weeks Gridiron Gems spotlight player is the Jets Super Bowl III starting center John Schmitt.

Schmitt came to the Jets as a free agent from the University of Hofstra, becoming the first professional football produced from the Pride.

In Schmitt's final year as Hofstra he earned All America honors.

I asked John who was the player that was the most difficult to block "Ernie Ladd, of the San Diego Chargers, he was so big that he blocked the sun from my side of the ball." Ladd was stood 6'9'' tipping the scales at 290. Ladd would play two season with the Houston OIlers and his last two with the Kansas City Chiefs
