Schaaf opened the week with a career-high 32 points and snagged a career-best 20 rebounds in Central Missouri’s 68-62 overtime win at Missouri Western. The junior guard/forward shot 70.6 percent from the field (12-of-17) and 70 percent at the free-throw line (7-of-10) in St. Joseph while her 20 rebounds were also the most individual single-game rebounds by a Jennie since 2017. Schaaf also added 20 points and five rebounds in Central Missouri's loss to Northwest Missouri in Maryville over the weekend. On the week, Schaaf shot 56 percent (19-of-34) from the floor and 81 percent (13-of-16) at the line to lead all MIAA scorers with 52 points. DeGarmo averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in victories over Rogers State and Central Oklahoma. The graduate student eclipsed the 2,000-point plateau in the Tigers 60-50 win over Rogers State, becoming just the second women’s basketball player in Fort Hays State history and the fourth active NCAA Division II player to reach that milestone. DeGarmo is currently the only active player in Division II with 2,000 career points, 1,000 career rebounds and 300 career assists. She totaled 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals against the Hillcats before racking up 17 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals in the 81-72 win against the Bronchos for the 40th double-double of her career.

In the loss to Central Missouri, Bonilla led the way with 15 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Bonilla then packed the stat sheet with 19 points on a 9-of-12 effort at the foul line to go with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in the Griffons 62-56 win over Washburn. Bonilla has now scored in double figures in 17 of the 18 games this season.

Jaeden McMillin, Newman

The MIAA has announced a new initiative through its Empower U partnership with Seigfreid Bingham that will provide a variety of NIL-related resources for MIAA student-athletes. The new education, compliance resources, and documents contain business and legal guidance for MIAA student-athletes in a variety of NIL opportunities.

The "Empower U" initiative is a name, image and likeness (NIL) service developed by Seigfreid Bingham. The service is designed to aid conferences and institutions (primarily organizations/institutions with smaller staffs and limited compliance resources) in navigating NCAA NIL policy guidance and various NIL state laws regulating student-athlete name, image, and likeness activities. Empower U offers NIL assistance through two service pillars — the first pillar is education and compliance assistance to conferences and institutions; the second pillar features direct education and guidance to a student-athlete on business, insurance, tax, and related financial/legal issues for a specific NIL opportunity.

“In Division II, many NIL opportunities require student-athletes to initiate these business activities on their own,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. “These new business and legal resources will provide MIAA students an advantage in how to set up a camp, clinic, private lessons, speaking engagement, and other NIL-related entrepreneurial activities.”

As part of the new program, Empower U has created a repository of NIL resources that will cover topics such as:

  • The use of an NIL Agent and Legal Representation as a student-athlete, what the benefits would be, how an agent should be selected, and what to include in an agent contract.

  • NIL Tax Considerations including how to file a tax return, what to account for, and deciding if someone is eligible to deduct NIL-related expenses.

  • Entity Selection and Criteria for creating an NIL business, how to do so, and what to do once the business has been formed.

  • Operating Agreement Considerations for an LLC to help walk the student-athlete through the process.

  • Access to NIL Contract Best Practices and Recommended Provisions that cover possible NIL-related provisions, potential services that will be provided by the student-athlete, and comments/recommendations to understanding the NCAA language.

  • Insight into FAQs for Running a Sports Camp/Lessons, what the legal risks might be, how to mitigate those risks, and certain responsibilities the athlete would need to consider. In addition to that, one would also have access to a sample Waiver and Consent Form to provide in those situations.

This program has been led by Seigfreid Bingham attorneys Greg Whitson and Tate Thompson who pilot the Empower U partnership with the MIAA.

“When we developed the Empower U program our goal was to help the MIAA and other conference clients empower their student-athletes in this new era of NIL," said Greg Whiston of Seigfreid Bingham. "We feel that the resources made available to student-athletes through our newest program will do just that and give student-athletes key resources to help them tap into NIL opportunities in an informed and business-like manner."

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its academic awards for the 2024 volleyball season.

One hundred and nineteen volleyball players from all 12 conference schools were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll in the 2024 season. There were also 27 players named Scholar-Athletes and 21 who earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award.

The league’s prestigious Academic Excellence Award was awarded to 21 volleyball student-athletes in the 2024 season. An Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for NCAA academic certification of at least 4.00 at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.

The Scholar-Athlete Award distinction went to just 27 student-athletes who excelled in the classroom and on the court. In the classroom, an MIAA Scholar-Athlete is an individual who has a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 or better at the certifying member institution. They must also have at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. On the court, the student-athlete must receive All-MIAA honors to fully achieve Scholar-Athlete status.

One hundred and nineteen volleyball players were named to the league's Academic Honor Roll. To be recognized on the league’s Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 or above at the certifying member institution. They also need at least two terms of attendance at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms.

There were only seven volleyball players to be honored with all three of the Association's postseason academic awards. The seven student-athletes to have extraordinary success in the classroom and in competition were Missouri Western's Lily Kurz and Emma Salker, Nebraska Kearney's Mia Berg and Emilee Lane, Northwest Missouri's Payton Krichhoefer and Kyah Luhring, and Washburn's Corinna McMullen.

These academic awards do not include true freshmen or first-year transfers who played on MIAA volleyball teams in the 2024 season. The Association will release its MIAA Newcomer Academic Awards from the 2024-25 academic year in late June, following the completion of those athletes' first two full terms at an MIAA institution.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announces first standings update for its 2024-2025 Commissioner’s Cup, presented by Impact.

The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup, newly presented by Impact, is the Association’s all-sports award given to the league’s top-performing university in conference-only events at the end of each academic year.

"It was another highly competitive fall in the MIAA with six different institutions winning a conference championship, demonstrating how competitive this conference is among all 14 members," said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. "We're thrilled to have a new national partner like Impact sponsoring the Commissioner's Cup this year," Racy continued. "The MIAA and Impact share the same commitment to excellence in everything we do and we are pleased to partner with them on this year's cup race!"

Northwest Missouri leads the 2024-25 standings following the completion of the 2024 fall sports seasons. The Bearcats’ fall was highlighted by the men’s cross country team who captured the program’s first MIAA cross country title in 52 years. Northwest’s women’s cross country team finished fourth in the league while the Bearcat volleyball team finished the season in a tie for fourth, Northwest football finished the season tied for fifth, and the Bearcat women’s soccer team finished sixth.

Close behind the Bearcats in the standings is Pittsburg State. The Gorillas collected an MIAA title at the 2024 women’s cross country championship and added a pair of runner-up finishes from men’s cross country and Gorilla football. The Pitt State women’s soccer team finished in a tie for eighth in its inaugural season and the Pitt State volleyball team finished ninth.

Central Oklahoma and Nebraska Kearney are tied for third in the first release of the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings.

Central Oklahoma won its first MIAA football title since joining the league in 2012. The Bronchos also added a runner-up finish thanks to Central Oklahoma volleyball. Central Oklahoma’s women’s soccer team also contributed to the Bronchos’ success this fall with a fourth-place finish in the MIAA season.

Nebraska Kearney’s fall was highlighted with a championship finish in the MIAA volleyball season. Both Loper men and women earned a top five finishes at the 2024 cross country championships while Kearney’s women’s soccer program finished seventh in the league.

Washburn concludes the current standing’s top five. The Ichabdos earned the 2024 MIAA women’s soccer title and had a pair of fourth place finishes from men’s cross country and Ichabod volleyball.

The current standings following the completion of the fall sports seasons for the 2024-25 MIAA Commissioner’s Cup presented by Impact are listed below.

The Commissioner’s Cup point system reflects each team’s finish in conference play. The number of points awarded per sport is based on the number of schools that participate in that particular sport. Each institution’s point total is then divided by the athletic programs it sponsors, giving an overall average finish for the school.

Content on the MIAA Network can be watched at TheMIAANetwork.com on computers and mobile devices. The MIAA Network is also available on four branded OTT apps: Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV.

Mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, and Android will work with the default web browser. Devices should be kept up to date and connected to a reliable data connection for optimal playback. Apple users and owners of an AppleTV device can simply 'throw' the webcast from their iPhone or iPad using the AirPlay feature. Computer users can output their display directly to an HDMI signal if supported, otherwise a converter may be required. These options may require advanced setup and we suggest using an 'On Demand' archive to test prior to watching a live event.
